VoIP, or voice over internet protocol, is making a big splash in the state of Washington. Not only are more homes and businesses turning to the service, but even emergency crews have jumped on the bandwagon of the internet phone service.

The Emergency Management Division in the state of Washington elected to upgrade their communications systems to a VoIP-based satellite communication system. The decision was made, because it will allow the emergency crews to overcome one of their greatest obstacles: the geography. In the past, it could be hard for emergency crews to communicate due to the mountain ranges of the Pacific Northwest. By using the satellite technology, they are now able to keep in touch, even when on opposite sides of the mountains.

Not all VoIP lines are satellite based, in fact most work through the internet signal you're already receiving, whether it's cable or DSL. While satellite VoIP is a great option for the emergency crews, a regular VoIP line is a great option for homes or businesses, and there are plenty of options in the state of Washington for it.

Companies like Vonage and Skype are nationwide and provide great VoIP service for homes and businesses. Both companies can help business owners and individuals save a lot of money on phone service, especially for long distance calls.
