Not too long ago, it was a big deal for a teenager to get their own phone line. Usually, the household had many phones, but only one line running to the house. A teenager that had their own phone line was able to chat away to their heart's content in their bedroom.

No, they are not. If your power or cable goes out, likely the phone goes out too. Traditional phones also carry thier own power and are generally very dependable.
