Virginia's five main cable TV providers vary greatly between technology and services offered, but are pretty similar in price. There is Charter Cable, a Richmond-based company, Verizon, which offers FiOS-fiber optic television, Cox, Time Warner, and Comcast. FiOS is a newer technology which advertises superior service, but with this can come a higher starting pricepoint.

There are only a few benefits to cable over satellite. Mainly that is that you won't lose your signal in heavy weather. After that Directv and Dish have either similiar or superior programming at what is usually a lower price. Of course if you have the benefit of competition between providers in your area then you can get much better deals than the rest of us.

The benefits of cable over satellite is mainly the contract. With cable you are not forced to sign a 1 or two year contract to be able to watch tv. You will not have wires hanging all around your home with cable which can be annoying. Another thing is you can watch the same cable in many different rooms without having to rent additional cable boxes for other tvs.

The primary advantage that digital cable offers over regular cable is the ability to record television shows and watch them at a later time. Another advantage is the freedom to see all current and upcoming shows (up to 48 hours forward or so) on all channels at will, as opposed to having to watch the guide channel on standard cable.
