VoIP is a word that's tossed around a lot these days, especially when it comes to the telephone industry, but what is it, and is it available in states not on the coast, like Utah?

VoIP stands for voice over internet protocol, which is a fancy name for an internet phone line. What VoIP does is take a standard analog voice signal and convert it to a digital signal that can be sent via an internet connection. A receiver at the other end re-converts the signal to analog so it can be received by a regular phone.

VoIP service is quickly sweeping the nation, as it is a lot less expensive and more useful than a regular landline phone. It is available in every state, including Utah, and it is a great replacement for landline service, whether it's used in a home or for a business.

Utah residents have a plethora of choices when it comes to VoIP service, starting with some names that may be more familiar than others. Places like Vonage and Time Warner are offering VoIP service nationwide, and it's a great option. It is inexpensive and well-known, so you know it works. Of course, there are some other providers, like Connect Communications or Telarus, that are offering service locally to different parts of the state. Unfortunately, pricing for these companies is likely to be a little higher than that of the national chains.

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a way of sending your voice to someone else and visa versa. You need a microphone, speakers, and software for your computer, or a standalone piece of hardware that has a phone plug, and dial the person up. This also may require a service or membership with the company you get the software or hardware from.
