Communication through cellular phones has been on a steady rise in Texas. The state is currently being covered by the two major cellphone technology networks CDMA and GSM. Although a huge chunk of cellular service is being offered by nationwide carriers, there are also a number of local operators. Some of these local companies are Brazos, Caprock, and Cellular One of East Texas.
Among the nationwide GSM carriers, you can find signals from T-Mobile and the other biggies in certain regions in the state. Alltel should have been included among the GSM biggies but since its acquisition by Verizon, customers are not yet sure whether they'll be operating over Verizon's CDMA network or Alltel's GSM (highly unlikely). In other areas, signals come from smaller GSM-based companies like the localized Texas RSA 3 and the (slightly) nationwide Amerilink. iPhone loyalists will be glad to know that AT&T arguably has the largest coverage here.
For the CDMA carriers, there's Verizon and Sprint among the big ones and Cricket and a few other locals among the smaller networks
Since there is really no single carrier, the big ones included, that has total network coverage throughout the state, it is relatively easy to decide which carrier you should subscribe to. If you constantly travel to different places in Texas, be prepared to encounter dead spots where you would have no way of communicating through your cell phone.
