The cable television business in Texas has gone a long way since its introduction into the state in the early 1950's. Nowadays, when Texans get a cable TV connection, they not only open the doors for watching movies and TV series episodes fed to their TV screens 24 hours a day. They are also treated to even more flexible products such as Time Warner's VoD (Video on Demand). Of course, you also get a similar feature using Netflix but that's another story. Well, not entirely. Netflix reminds us of still another innovation in cable TV that allows subscribers to enjoy other products - high speed Internet.

Many Wi-Fi hotspots around Texas are operating on top of cable TV technology. In fact, Comcast has long been testing the waters here with free Wi-Fi services, possibly hoping to bundle them in the future with cable TV packages in order to compete with the Wi-Fi services of mobile telecommunication giants like AT&T and Verizon.

Talking about phone companies, cable technology also allows for phone services. One of the providers of this service in Texas is Suddenlink. Cable-based phones are touted to have better voice quality plus the possibility of accommodating VOIP. This would mean cheaper or unlimited national or international phone access for Texas subscribers.

The benefits of cable over satellite is mainly the contract. With cable you are not forced to sign a 1 or two year contract to be able to watch tv. You will not have wires hanging all around your home with cable which can be annoying. Another thing is you can watch the same cable in many different rooms without having to rent additional cable boxes for other tvs.

For cable television, you need only the cable box to connect the coaxial cable from the wall to your television. With satellite television, you need the receiver as well as the dish. Cable television will generally continue to be viewable during inclement weather, while satellite television will often go out during storms. With satellite television, you may periodically need to replace or reset the dish, as it can be knocked from its position or damaged.

The primary advantage that digital cable offers over regular cable is the ability to record television shows and watch them at a later time. Another advantage is the freedom to see all current and upcoming shows (up to 48 hours forward or so) on all channels at will, as opposed to having to watch the guide channel on standard cable.
