Oregon residents can enter the latest technology craze and take part in the latest trend in telephone technology. No, this isn't the cell phone, this is voice over internet protocol, or VoIP technology. Through VoIP, a regular analog voice signal is converted to a digital signal that can be transmitted via the internet.

VoIP allows customers to make regular phone calls using the internet connection they already have. There are several options for VoIP service for residents of Oregon. There are a couple well-known services, like Vonage, and there are a couple other local companies that have invested in the service, like Sunrocket, Packet 8 and MyPhoneCompany. Each of these services is much cheaper than regular landline phone service, coming in between $17 and $25 per month.

With VoIP, users can either convert the phones they already have via a VoIP converter, or get a special VoIP handset. At the very least, a consumer could use their personal computer to make calls, talking and listening through a headset with a microphone.

Oregon residents have many options, some local and some national, for VoIP service, each will save quite a bit of money on phone service.

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a way of sending your voice to someone else and visa versa. You need a microphone, speakers, and software for your computer, or a standalone piece of hardware that has a phone plug, and dial the person up. This also may require a service or membership with the company you get the software or hardware from.
