It's the latest entry in the contest for your communication dollar and it's coming on fast. VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, wants to become your home phone and many folks are finding the deals attractive enough to drop their traditional landline service.
VoIP is not subject to many of the fees, tariffs or infrastructure needs of other phone companies, which leads to lower prices. It requires a high-speed internet connection and a special modem or adapter that fits into your computer, then you can start chatting through a phone handset or headset. Since it's a computer connection, it means wherever your computer goes, your phone line goes with it.
For VoIP in North Carolina, you'll find at least half a dozen full service providers, including Vonage, Lingo and Packet8. There are also so called free web-based companies, like Skype, that offer free calls to other users of the same service. Those are great if all you want is to make or receive calls, but if you need other familiar phone features, then the full service companies are the ones to consider. Their plans offer call-waiting, 3-way calling, call-forwarding, voicemail and more. Most allow you to use the landline phone number you have now, so you can feel right at home from the moment you start your VoIP service.

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a way of sending your voice to someone else and visa versa. You need a microphone, speakers, and software for your computer, or a standalone piece of hardware that has a phone plug, and dial the person up. This also may require a service or membership with the company you get the software or hardware from.
