It's beamed to your home. It went digital before cable. It's often the cheapest of the digital television services.

Satellite TV has quite a lot going for it. The biggest plus is that the sky's the limit. Cable TV is only available where lines can be run from hubs to homes, not easy in some of North Carolina's rugged terrain. Satellite reception is limited only by an unobstructed view of the southern sky. It can take a little time to adjust the dish to the right angle, but after that, the only cable needed is from the dish to the digital set-top receiver.

The Dish Network and DirecTV are the satellite services in the state. You'll find most of the same channel options as cable and DSL, with hundreds available and a huge lineup of premium movie and sport selections. But satellite also has the ability to offer both east coast and west coast feeds of programs. In addition, the companies often work with their communities to bring in sporting events of local interest.

Like the equipment for cable and DSL, the dish and receiver for satellite service is either free with the package or available for a one-time fee. Internet and phone connections can be bundled into their deals. And with no underground lines to run and little other infrastructure, satellite providers can offer their services at a lower rate than the other companies.

The benefits of cable over satellite is mainly the contract. With cable you are not forced to sign a 1 or two year contract to be able to watch tv. You will not have wires hanging all around your home with cable which can be annoying. Another thing is you can watch the same cable in many different rooms without having to rent additional cable boxes for other tvs.

For cable television, you need only the cable box to connect the coaxial cable from the wall to your television. With satellite television, you need the receiver as well as the dish. Cable television will generally continue to be viewable during inclement weather, while satellite television will often go out during storms. With satellite television, you may periodically need to replace or reset the dish, as it can be knocked from its position or damaged.
