If you don't have cable TV now, you're going to want it in the near future. Cable's time has come, with Congress mandating that the nation must make the switch to digital distribution by June 12th, 2009.

So when you're ready to get rid of the rabbit ears, you'll want to get your cable box and connection from a franchise that serves your neighborhood. For many communities in North Carolina, that's likely to be Time Warner or Comcast, though in some locations cable is provided by smaller companies, like Northland and Starvision.

Once you've called your local provider, you'll need to determine the cable package that fits your needs and interests. Do you want the basic rundown to keep costs low or the expanded line-up with as many as 500 channels? Can't do without the latest movies? Then you may want some or all of the premium channels. Do you need DVR so you can record your shows for later viewing? What about quality? High-definition will give you color and crispness that makes the pictures pop.

Be sure to consider all the services that the companies provide. Don't forget that bundling internet and phone with your cable service may help you cut other costs at home.

The benefits of cable over satellite is mainly the contract. With cable you are not forced to sign a 1 or two year contract to be able to watch tv. You will not have wires hanging all around your home with cable which can be annoying. Another thing is you can watch the same cable in many different rooms without having to rent additional cable boxes for other tvs.

For cable television, you need only the cable box to connect the coaxial cable from the wall to your television. With satellite television, you need the receiver as well as the dish. Cable television will generally continue to be viewable during inclement weather, while satellite television will often go out during storms. With satellite television, you may periodically need to replace or reset the dish, as it can be knocked from its position or damaged.

The primary advantage that digital cable offers over regular cable is the ability to record television shows and watch them at a later time. Another advantage is the freedom to see all current and upcoming shows (up to 48 hours forward or so) on all channels at will, as opposed to having to watch the guide channel on standard cable.
