Voice Over Internet Protocol, or VOIP, uses an existing network such as the Internet to provide phone service. There are many benefits to this new technology with virtually no drawbacks. There is a significant cost advantage when using a VOIP system because it uses communication lines already in service for other needs (the Internet). Furthermore, the quality of the call is on par with traditional home phone service. You need a microphone, speakers, and software for your computer, or a standalone piece of hardware that has a phone plug, and dial the person up. This also may require a service or membership with the company you get the software or hardware from.
