The D.C. area has a number of first-class cable TV providers including Comcast, Cox, Adelphia, and Starpower. Comcast is the largest, serving not only the D.C. area, but also the adjacent cities of Baltimore, Arlington, Alexandria and many more. Comcast works here under its Reston' trademark, which is actually one of the oldest cable providers in the USA and the world, dating back to the early 1970s.

Back then, the system carried only 14 channels, but after Comcast modernized it with fiberoptics in 1990s, Reston started to carry more than 80 channels. Comcast also offers an internet cable service in this area called @Home.

Cox operates in the Fairfax County and Fredericksburg systems. You can find channel line-ups and rate information at cox.com. Their offered service line-up includes digital cable, high speed internet and digital telephone.

The technology business is a very dynamic business, and consolidation in this industry is picking up even as you read this. Adelphia was recently acquired by Road Runner of Time Warner Cable, which used to operate many cable systems west of the DC/Baltimore area such as Frederick (MD), Loudoun, Winchester, Warrenton and the Shenandoah Valley. RCN Starpower, recently acquired by DeltaThree, provides service to parts of D.C., Montgomery and Falls Church. This company is famous for its Starpower Internet Phone service, which is a VoIP-powered technology.

The benefits of cable over satellite is mainly the contract. With cable you are not forced to sign a 1 or two year contract to be able to watch tv. You will not have wires hanging all around your home with cable which can be annoying. Another thing is you can watch the same cable in many different rooms without having to rent additional cable boxes for other tvs.

For cable television, you need only the cable box to connect the coaxial cable from the wall to your television. With satellite television, you need the receiver as well as the dish. Cable television will generally continue to be viewable during inclement weather, while satellite television will often go out during storms. With satellite television, you may periodically need to replace or reset the dish, as it can be knocked from its position or damaged.

The primary advantage that digital cable offers over regular cable is the ability to record television shows and watch them at a later time. Another advantage is the freedom to see all current and upcoming shows (up to 48 hours forward or so) on all channels at will, as opposed to having to watch the guide channel on standard cable.
