What is VoIP PBX?

VoIP, or Voice Over Internet Protocol, is an increasingly popular way to make a phone call using your high-speed internet connection instead of a standard phone line. But what exactly is VoIP PBX?

Well, to understand a VoIP PBX, you first have to understand a standard PBX. PBX is the abbreviation for private branch exchange. A private branch exchange is simply a phone system set up within a specific company or office.

Every office has a private branch exchange, and most include things like private extensions and voicemail for each employee. With a VoIP PBX, nothing changes except the way the telephone calls are made.

With a VoIP PBX, a company's phone system would be set up through their internet connection as opposed to an outside phone line. That's really the only difference. Each employee could keep a separate extension as well as their own voicemail account. They wouldn't even know anything had changed, because on the surface, nothing really has.

A VoIP PBX will add several features to an office that weren't available through standard phone service. Since the office's phone service is coming through an internet connection, things like video conferencing are now available to the employees. Also, employees could send or receive files to the person they are talking with during the conversation.

Also, a VoIP PBX can provide a single phone system for companies that have multiple offices in different locations, making it easier for employees on different sides of the country, or the world, to stay in touch.

VoIP is a very popular technology and will likely become the standard in the telephone industry sooner rather than later, so adding a VoIP PBX will put your office one step ahead of the game and will ensure that your PBX will last well into the future.

A VoIP PBX won't require major adjustments from the office staff to be able to use, but it will add some features that may come in handy when working with people both inside and outside of the company.
