Connecting To A Public Wi-Fi Network

As the internet continues to grow, more and more places are adding Wi-Fi hotspots, which are public places where you can connect to the internet wirelessly. Places like Starbuck's Coffee, Panera Bread and even airports are now offering Wi-Fi service.

But even if you run into a Wi-Fi network, how do you connect to it? It's as simple as connecting to your home wireless network in most cases, although some places do charge a fee for access.

Your first step is to extract your laptop computer, turn it on and open your internet browser. With some wireless networks, your laptop will be able to detect the network and connect on its own. If so, you're good to go. Enjoy the internet.

If that's not the case, then check your wireless settings. Make sure the Wi-Fi network being offered by the public place is selected. If not, select and connect to that network. The network name, or SSID, will usually be the name of the establishment. You shouldn't need a password, but if you do, it's usually listed on a flier somewhere in the building.

You can also connect to public Wi-Fi networks using certain types of cell phones. Some cell phones, mostly personal organizers, will connect to the Wi-Fi network, giving you quicker access to emails and web pages. Your cell phone must be a Wi-Fi enabled device to be able to connect.

Don't be fooled, though. Even if you do connect to some networks, as soon as you open your browser, they'll ask you for a username/password that can only be gained through purchase.

Basically, the only thing you need to connect to a public Wi-Fi network is your laptop and a wireless card…and in some places, a credit card.
